The Boat

For 2.5 years we have looked at over 20 boats in countries like Greece, France, Spain, Great Britain and the Netherlands.

Some requirements:

  • Minimum length: 40 feet to avoid being just shaken in the Atlantic waves
  • Maximum length: 50 feet, which is the maximum we can still operate without electric winches. Also the cost increases exponentially with each foot more….
  • There should be room for 6 sailors to make a reasonable watch schedule for long crossings. Two wet rooms would be nice…
  • Aluminum would provide additional safety especially in high latitudes.
  • Easy handling with reefing capabilities from the cockpit is mandatory.
  • Centerboard, is a device to reduce draft to allow shallow anchorages to be approached and provides the ability to drop dry in tidal waters. Shallow anchorages often provide more protection and therefore also increase safety.
  • It should be an older and proven boat, but with a “perfectionist” pre-owner and a good “history”.
  • It should also be pleasing to the eye…

…….

Typical boats with these characteristics come from Ovni, Garcia, Koopman, van de Stadt, Alliage, Reinke, Boreal (Rolls Royce), …
